It is has been well documented that there are gaps in mental health service provision for under children and adolescents. A Vision for Change reported that the child CMHTs are well below the recommended norms, while dedicated adolescent mental health services are virtually non-existent on a national basis.
This study will extract data on admissions to units and hospitals for children and adolescents (under 18 years of age) from the National Psychiatric In-patient Reporting System (NPIRS) for the last 10 years. Data from HIPE will be obtained on admissions for under 18s to general hospitals with a mental health problem. Trends in admissions will be examined and discussed in relation to current and future service provision as advocated by A Vision for Change.
