Schizophrenia research

The Irish Schizophrenia Study commenced in October 1999. It represents a continuation of ongoing research carried out by Dr Dermot Walsh and Professor Kenneth Kendler, to identify location of genes which influence the transmission of schizophrenia.

In 2002, investigators on this project discovered a gene that appears to be strongly associated with Schizophrenia. It is the most important finding in research into this disabling condition in the past twenty years. Results were published in the August edition of the American Journal of Human Genetics. The project is collaboration between the HRB, the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, Queen's University Belfast and is funded by the US National Institute of Mental Health.
