Reducing the revolving door phenomena

De-institutionalisation has resulted in a reduction in the number of inpatient admissions in Ireland. However, readmissions continue to account for over 70% of all inpatient admissions despite expansions in community-based services, pointing very much to a system based on a revolving door phenomenon.

The policy document, A Vision for Change, identified many shortcomings in the current model of provision of mental health services, making recommendations for the future development of community-based services which were necessary if services were to move from mainly inpatient care.  Such recommendations are reviewed in relation to readmissions and the impact they may have on eliminating the revolving door phenomenon.
