Mental Health Research Unit

Welcome to the Mental Health Research Unit

The Mental Health Research Unit (MHRU) manages mental health information systems which collect activity data from the Irish mental health services. Annual statistical reports and bulletins are provided. The National Psychiatric In–Patient Reporting System (NPIRS) collects information on inpatient activity while WISDOM - a web-based system collects information on all secondary level elements of the psychiatric service including all community psychiatric services. WISDOM is operating on a Proof of Concept basis in the Donegal area until the end of June 2010.

Following a strategic review of HRB activities in 2009, the role of the Mental Health Research Unit [MHRU] in mental health will focus on gathering, analyzing and researching information from our National Psychiatric Inpatient Reporting System and related databases. The HRB Mental Health Research Programme will cease and the broader research concerns exploring psycho-social aspects of mental health, wellbeing and distress will no longer be addressed by the MHRU.  However, research based on the information systems will continue to be carried out as resources allow.

The Unit research findings and reports from the information systems are disseminated through HRB publications and peer-reviewed academic journals. The work of the Unit informs national policy, health service management, clinical practice and international academic research.
