HRB research provides foundation for crack cocaine strategy

24 February 2009

The Inter-Sectoral Crack Cocaine Strategy Group, (ISCCSG) which was established by the late Tony Gregory through the North Inner City Community Policing Forum, is meeting to try to plan a co-ordinated response to crack cocaine in Ireland. Much of this work will be based on the findings of a recent Health Research Board (HRB) report, Crack cocaine in the Dublin region ? an evidence base for a crack cocaine strategy.

According to John Curran TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy and Community Affairs; 'The HRB report provides a very clear picture of the nature and extent of the use of crack cocaine in Dublin and the consequences it has for users, families and society'. Often research emerges long after a problem has taken root and therefore is of reduced practical use, but the evidence and in-depth analysis contained in this study provides a strong basis on which we can plan a timely and appropriate response.

Participants at the seminar will review the findings of the HRB report and consider international best practice treatment, policing and partnership responses to crack cocaine. The overall objective of the seminar is to identify practical recommendations which will enhance current treatment and policing approaches and prevent the growth of crack markets and crack-related harm.
