The conference heard from education and training providers, services providers and researchers who spoke on how best the sector can facilitate training transfer and what is required to develop the addiction workforce in Ireland. Joy Barlow, Strategic Advisor to the Scottish Training on Drugs and Alcohol (STRADA) gave the keynote address.

'Since the HRB National Documentation Centre on Drug Use (NDC) opened its research library and website in 2002 it has sought to provide a knowledge base to inform policy and practice in the field of substance abuse in Ireland', says Brian Galvin, Senior Information Specialist at the NDC.

'We have moved beyond our initial aim to provide electronic access to Irish research literature in the drugs area, and now also collate international literature in policy, treatment, prevention, rehabilitation, crime and other drug and alcohol-related topics.

We are committed to deliver an innovative, responsive and efficient service to those pursuing an evidence-based approach in the policy making, research and education arenas.'

The NDC is funded by the Department of Health (under the National Drug Strategy).

  • A  special collection of international literature in policy, treatment, prevention, rehabilitation and crime and other drug and alcohol-related topics available in the library in the HRB.
  • An information and support service.
  • An online data query system which website visitors can use to interrogate drug treatment data.
  • An online directory of drugs and alcohol training and education courses.
  • A database of evidence resources comprising systematic reviews and other material to support best practice in drugs and alcohol work.
