						<title>HRB Collaborative Applied Research Grants in Population Health and Health Services Research</title>

						<description><![CDATA[<strong>Collaborative Applied Research Grants in Population Health and Health Services Research Ca</strong><strong>ll for Expressions of Interest 2012</strong>
The Collaborative Applied Research Grants are programmatic awards to support teams of high-calibre researchers from academia, health and social services, population health and/or policy institutions who have an existing and impressive track record in applied health services and/or population health research. Collaborative Applied Health Research, as defined for the purposes of this scheme, is research with an emphasis on providing evidence to improve health outcomes for individuals, communities and populations, typically thorough improved healthcare and better health care delivery.
Applied health research in population health and health services research involves building teams across disciplines and is typically multi-disciplinary and collaborative. It can employ quantitative, qualitative or mixed methodologies. Programme Grants typically consist of an interrelated group of high quality projects focused on a coherent theme and hence require multi- and inter-disciplinary approaches to ensure that research objectives can be met.
<span lang="EN-US">Applications to this scheme must fulfill all of the following criteria:</span>
<ul><li><div><span lang="EN-US"><span lang="EN-US">Address a question/s of clear strategic relevance and importance to health and social well-being in Ireland and adequately justify why this programme now needs to be conducted in Ireland ;</span></span></div></li><li><div><span lang="EN-US"><span lang="EN-US">Involve collaborations between researchers, practitioners and institutions, as is appropriate to the research topic;</span></span></div></li><li><div><span lang="EN-US">Describe the likely transferability of research findings into recommendations for policy and/or practice as appropriate;</span></div></li><li><div><span lang="EN-US">Have the potential for the findings to be applied to other issues and situations outside of the immediate area of research;</span></div></li><li><div><span lang="EN-US">Bring together a team with a strong expertise and track record across a range of disciplines relevant to the research topic;</span></div></li><li><div><span lang="EN-US">Use rigorous methods, appropriate to the research questions.</span></div></li></ul>
<span lang="EN-US"></span>
<strong>Who should apply? </strong>
<span lang="EN-US">The Principal Investigator must hold a post (permanent or a contract that covers the duration of the award) in a recognised research organisation in the Republic of Ireland as an independent investigator and</span><strong> </strong>have a demonstrated record of achievement in applied population health and/or health service research with a broad spectrum of achievements such as publications in peer reviewed journals, published books, reports to government, participation on national advisory groups and/or task forces, input into formal guidelines and protocols, attraction of peer-reviewed grant funding, IP developments and/or commercialisation activities.
<span lang="EN-US">The research team should contain the necessary breadth and depth of expertise in the relevant methodological areas required in the development and delivery of the proposed programme.</span>
<strong>What does the award include? </strong>
The award will provide funding of up to a total of €1.25 million for up to 5 years. <span lang="EN-US">Funding will cover salary-related costs, direct running costs, dissemination and knowledge exchange costs, programme management costs and a contribution to overheads. </span>
<strong>How are applications submitted?</strong> 
Expression of Interest Applications can be submitted online using the HRB eGrants System. Following a review by an international committee, short-listed applications will be invited in March 2012 to submit a Full Application. 
<strong>When is the deadline for application?</strong>
The “Expression of Interest” application and signature page must be submitted by 13:00pm on 16 February 2012.

						<title>HRB Interdisciplinary Capacity Enhancement Awards 2012</title>

						<description><![CDATA[This innovative postdoctoral fellowship scheme by the HRB is aimed at building and attracting capacity into population health and health services research and, through a team-based approach, will enable the development of partnerships between researchers, practitioners and decision makers in policy and health service delivery. The ICE Awards initiative is a strategic initiative to address gaps in capacity, build on existing investment, strength and capabilities and encourage partnership and collaboration between the population health research and health services research communities and clinical researchers.&nbsp; Applicant teams must be interdisciplinary in nature to ensure that fellows receive appropriate training and mentoring in contextual, methodological and other issues related to their work and they develop skills and competencies required for successful interdisciplinary and trans-sectoral research in population health and health services research.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>&nbsp;</strong>
<strong>Who should apply? </strong>
The initiative takes a team-based interdisciplinary approach whereby existing teams or newly formed teams of senior established researchers come together to apply for one to three postdoctoral fellows to join their team to add value through expertise and insight.&nbsp; Interdisciplinary teams under this scheme is a group of researchers from a variety of disciplines working collaboratively on projects that fall within population health or health services research.&nbsp; Interdisciplinary teams can apply seek funding for early postdoctoral trainees, for Research Fellows or for Senior Research Fellows.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
<strong>What does the award include? </strong>
The ICE Awards are primarily development and training awards to attract, engage and mentor postdoctoral researchers.&nbsp; As such funds will be used to provide support for postdoctoral researchers with a small yearly running cost allowance.&nbsp; Postdoctoral fellowships can be held on a full-time or part-time basis.&nbsp; Allowable costs include salary support for postdoctoral fellows, training and development allowance, research experience allowance, dissemination and knowledge exchange costs and the yearly running cost allowance.

						<title>Summer Student Scholarships 2012</title>

						<description><![CDATA[<span lang="EN-GB">The Health Research Board invites applications for summer scholarships from undergraduate students in health-related disciplines to support their participation in research during Summer 2012.&nbsp; </span>The purpose of the student scholarships is to encourage an interest in research and to give the student an opportunity to become familiar with research techniques.
<strong><span lang="EN-GB">WHO should apply?</span></strong>
<strong><span lang="EN-GB">Undergraduate students who are not in the final year </span></strong><span lang="EN-GB">of their degree course who are studying in a health-related discipline at a university in Ireland.</span>
<span lang="EN-GB">In line with the HRB strategy the project must fall within one of the following research areas:&nbsp; </span>clinical research, health services research, population health sciences research or applied biomedical research.&nbsp; Applications that focus solely or predominantly on basic biomedical research are not eligible.
<strong><span lang="EN-US">WHAT is the value of the award?</span></strong>
<span lang="EN-GB">The amount paid will be €250 per week for a maximum of eight weeks.</span>

<h6>About the MRCG/HRB Joint Funding Scheme </h6>
Since 2006, the Medical Research Charities Group (MRCG) and the HRB have operated an innovative joint funding scheme that allows members of the MRCG to support research of particular interest to specific patient populations. This scheme provides funding for clearly defined research projects in disease areas of strategic relevance to each individual charity. MRCG/HRB awards will be up to a maximum total award value of €300,000 for projects from 12 up to 36 months. 
<strong>The scheme has now been opened to MRCG registered charities, and over the coming months participating charities will open calls for proposals through their respective websites/ communications channels. Those interested in this scheme should contact the MRCG for further information.</strong> 
As calls are announced, applicants should contact the designated contact point at the respective charity.

						<title>National Cancer Institute Summer Curriculum in Cancer Prevention</title>

						<description><![CDATA[<span lang="EN-GB">The Ireland-Northern Ireland-National Cancer Institute Cancer Consortium aims to provide world-class cancer care to people on the island of Ireland and, to this end, participates in a range of educational programmes. </span><span lang="EN-US">As part of the 2011 Consortium activities, the Health Research Board, in association with the National Cancer Institute in the US and the HSC R&amp;D Office in Northern Ireland, invites applications for the prestigious NCI Summer Curriculum in Cancer Prevention programme.</span> 
<div><br /><strong>Available Courses: </strong>
<em><span lang="EN-US">Principles and Practice of Cancer Prevention and Control</span></em><span lang="EN-US"> is a four-week course of specialised instruction on concepts, issues and applications in the field of cancer prevention. Participants will gain a broad perspective on these subjects, in terms of resources, data, methods and theories. </span>
<em>Molecular Prevention</em> is a one-week course on molecular aspects of cancer prevention. Participants will be given a firm grounding in the molecular biology and genetics of cancer, and an overview of basic laboratory approaches in the fields of molecular epidemiology, bio-nutrition, chemo-prevention, biomarkers and translational research.</div>

<span lang="EN-US"><strong>Eligible Applicants:</strong></span>
<span lang="EN-US">Applications are invited from health-related researchers and practitioners working in the Republic of Ireland who have an interest in cancer prevention and control. A doctoral degree or relevant experience in cancer prevention and control is an advantage. Applicants can apply for one or both of these courses.</span>
<span lang="EN-US"><br /></span>
<span lang="EN-US"><br /><strong>Course Dates and Location:</strong></span>
<span lang="EN-US"><span lang="EN-US">Principles and Practice of Cancer Prevention and Control will run from 9<sup>th</sup> July to <span lang="EN-US">3<sup>rd</sup></span> August 2012. Molecular Prevention will run from 6<sup>th</sup> to 10<sup>th</sup> August 2012.</span> Both courses take place at the National Cancer Institute, Rockville, Maryland, US.</span>
<span lang="EN-US"><br /><strong>Cost:</strong></span>
<span lang="EN-US">The National Cancer Institute provides these courses free of charge for participants from Ireland. Successful applicants will have a return economy flight to the US and accommodation costs paid by the Health Research Board.</span>
