HRB Health Innovation Award winners

7 October 2016

The multi-disciplinary Auditory Implant Clinic at Mater Hospital has won the HRB-sponsored Health Innovation category at this year's Irish Medical and Surgical Trade Association Med Tech Awards. Their innovation has reduced access times for hearing assessments from over 18 months to less than two weeks.

Representatives from Audiology and the ENT Departments, Mater Hospital, Ms Karen Davies, Tricia Canning-Stewart, Roulla Katiri, Teresa O'Rourke accept the award from Dr Graham Love, Chief Executive, HRB

Graham Love, Chief Executive of the Health Research Board said,

'This is a fantastic innovation which is already delivering real benefit to patients and improving approaches to care – outcomes that the HRB actively pursues'.

The joint Audiology / Ear Nose Throat (ENT) implant clinics were established in 2014 in an attempt to streamline service delivery and improve the local implementation of the National Bone Anchored Hearing Aid Programme.

Since inception, they have;

  • reduced waiting times from over 18 months to less than two weeks
  • reduced duplication of services
  • reduced the number of pre-assessment visits required from four to three
  • and acted as a catalyst for the development of new services such as the Middle Ear Implants Pilot Site.

The HRB would like to extend our congratulations to the entire team and in particular Mr Stephen Kieran, Consultant Otolaryngologist / ENT Surgeon and Ms Roulla Katiri, Chief Audiologist at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.
