Dr Dermot Walsh - Rest in peace

Dr Dermot Walsh

It is with great sadness that we pass on the news that our esteemed friend and colleague Dr Dermot Walsh passed away recently (8 February 2017).

Dr Walsh made an immense contribution to mental health care and research in Ireland.

Dr Walsh was Director of the Mental Health Section of the Medico-Social Research Board and subsequently the Health Research Board (HRB) from 1969-2003. He was also Inspector of Mental Hospitals from 1987–2003 and served as psychiatric advisor to the Department of Health during this time. Dr Walsh was responsible for setting up the National Psychiatric In-patient Reporting System (NPIRS) in the early 1960s.

He remained in the HRB and worked with the NPIRS team until 2015. He will be sadly missed here and in the mental health community.
