Professor Michael J Kerin

Professor of Surgery, National University of Ireland Galway

Professor Kerin holds an MB, B Ch, BAO (National University of Ireland) Galway from 1984. He acquired the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1988 and an M Ch (National University of Ireland) Galway, 1991.

Professor Kerin completed his surgical training in Leeds and in Ireland and acquired the Intercollegiate Speciality Examination in General Surgery 1995.

Professor Kerin has held the following positions;

  • Professor of Surgery and Head of Department NUIG & the University College Hospital Galway, September 2004 - Present.
  • Lead Surgeon for Breastcheck, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital /Honorary Senior Lecturer, University College Dublin, September 1999 - August 2004.
  • Senior Lecturer/Consultant Surgeon at University of Hull, Academic Surgical Unit September 1996 - Aug 1999.

As Director of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute, Professor Kerin runs a programme of research involving molecular profiling, gene therapy and population genetics. These programmes are currently funded by the Health Research Board, Cancer Research Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, Marie Curie Foundation as well as the NBCRI and have led to several research prizes and awards at national and international meetings.

Professor Kerin currently sits on the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and is a past Millin Lecturer as well as a former James IV International travelling Fellow. He has been external assessor to the UK breast screening programme as well as external examiner for PhDs in several UK Universities. He is the author of more than 100 peer reviewed publications and is on the organising committee of several national and international meetings.

Professor Kerin was appointed to the board of the HRB in June 2007.
