Dr Colin Doherty

Consultant neurologist, St James’s Hospital, Dublin

Dr Doherty is a consultant neurologist at St James’s hospital in Dublin. He has a special interest in epilepsy and behavioural neurology.  He trained at University College Dublin, Medical School, graduating in 1991. After general medical training, he completed two years of subspecialty training in neurology at Beaumont hospital where he also did his doctoral research. In 1998 he joined the neurology training programme at Harvard Medical School in Boston and was chief resident there in 2000. After residency he completed two fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital, one in epilepsy the other in cognitive neurology. He came back to Ireland in 2003.

Dr Doherty is a co-investigator on a number of national and international collaborative research studies concerning imaging and the genetics of epilepsy and cognition. He received an innovation award from the Department of Health and Children to develop a community based epilepsy service to reduce hospital admissions and improve community care of patients with epilepsy. Dr Doherty has been appointed National Clinical lead in Epilepsy with a charge to develop epilepsy services nationally to improve standards of care and access.

Dr Doherty was appointed to the board of the HRB in June 2010.
